Natural Beauties: Basketry, Glass, Gourds, Pottery, Wood, and other Natural Media
Exhibit on View May 21 – July 5, 2019
Currently in SASi’s galleries is Natural Beauties, an exhibit and sale of objects made primarily from natural materials. Artists working in clay, gourds, wood, and glass have created both functional and decorative items that are for sale. While some art forms remain traditional, many artists have given these natural materials a decidedly different twist. Some potters make whimsical vases using non-traditional forms and others use ancient glazing techniques that look like they were found in an archaeological dig. Gourds are intricately carved and decorated with colorful paint. A mirror is framed with wood, twigs, pine cones, moss, and a variety of nuts to make a one of a kind statement-piece for the home. Artists use stained glass and mosaic tiles to paint a picture. There is something special and unique about every object as it relates to something made from the earth.
Reception and Musical Artists
The public is invited to attend a reception for Natural Beauties on Saturday June 1 from 6 until 8 pm. This is a free event and dress is casual. Many of the artists will be on hand to meet and discuss their artwork. Artist Diane Brzeski will demonstrate her woodcarving techniques during the reception.
Live music will be provided by members of the Carolina’s Flute Circle, with handmade flutes for sale. Natural Beauties will be on view in the galleries of Southern Arts Society through July 5.
