Gateway to Nature art competition and exhibition opens this week at Southern Arts Society in Kings Mountain. Gateway to Nature is an art exhibition and competition sponsored by Southern Arts Society to explore the beauty of the world around us and how we interact with nature. Artists were asked to create work that celebrates, references, or challenges our relationship with the natural world. There is a wide variety of media featured in the show – painting (oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel), colored pencil, collage, photography, and mixed media. Artists from around the region entered over seventy works for this year’s exhibit.
Individual artists explore diverse views from colors and styles to express their interpretation of the landscape, flora and fauna. You will recognize places, birds, animals, and insects, caught in a glimpse, that are put down on canvas or captured in a photograph. These ephemeral moments are artistically captured to enjoy for posterity.
Also on view is the Trail photography competition, sponsored by the Kings Mountain Gateway Trail and Southern Arts Society. This exhibit features photos taken on the Gateway Trail over the past two years. Visitors along the trail, both two and four legged, winged and not, all provide great photo opportunities to the perceptive observer. Even with the latest technology in cameras, it truly takes patience and a steady hand to catch a flitting butterfly or bee in flight.
The public is invited to attend a reception this coming Saturday, August 10, from 6-8 pm. Winners for both competitions will be announced at 7 pm. Many of the artists will be in attendance to meet visitors and discuss their work. This is a free event. Dress is casual. Work in the exhibits is available for sale.
Gateway to Nature and Trail 2024 will be on display in the galleries of Southern Arts Society through September 20, 2024.
NEW Summer Hours: Thurs – Sat, 10 am to 3 pm and by Appointment.
