Mixed Media 2 Day Workshop with Dianne Garner

  • Dates: Saturday, April 23 from 9 am – 3 pm and Sunday, April 24 from 12:30 – 4:30 pm.
  • Cost: $50 for SASi Members and $60 for Non-members
  • Student Level: Beginner to Intermediate
  • Age Level: Ages 16 and up
  • Class Size: Limited to 8 Students

  • Description: In this class Dianne will share collage techniques learned in a recent class taken at the John C. Campbell Folk School. You will learn to stitch through the canvas and use transfers onto packing tape and cloth to be stitched on. You will also use a Gelli Arts plate to print papers and make your own paste papers to add to your collage. You may want to bring a small box to cover with papers. Dianne will show you how to make transfers on packing tape.
  • Supplies: Dianne will provide Gelli Plates, paste for paste papers, misc. papers including Japanese Washi papers.
    Students need to bring*:
    – One Gelli Arts pad 4×6 or 5×7 – (only if you have one already, Dianne will supply if you don’t; find Gelli Arts pad at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Dick Blick, Cheap Joes’s, etc.
    – Acrylic and Watercolor paints in various colors
    – Brushes, palette and water container
    – Good quality clear packing tape
    – Cloth scraps, Embroidery floss, upholstry needle and misc. threads
    – Stencils, stamps, beads, sequins, found objects
    – Copies of images made from a copier (not a printer),
    – Magazine cutouts, newspaper, scrapbook papers, kraft paper, junk mail, anything for collage
    – Glue and Polymer Medium – Matt or Gloss
    – 2 canvases (8×10 or larger)
    – Sketch book, pencil for note taking

    *SASi can provide brushes, some papers, paints, and miscellaneous supplies for class use. 


Painting on Yupo 2 Day Workshop with Dianne Garner

  • Dates: Saturday, May 21 from 9 am – 3 pm and Sunday, May 22 from 12:30 – 4:30 pm.
  • Cost: $50 for SASi Members and $60 for Non-members
  • Student Level: Beginner to Intermediate
  • Age Level: Ages 16 and up
  • Class Size: Limited to 8 Students

  • Description: Dianne will teach techniques learned from a workshop taken with Fred Graff. In this class you will learn Composition, Positive/Negative, Impact, and Two types of under-glazing – abstract and controlled. Dianne will cover Tangent Lines, Happy Endings, Perspective, and Center of Interest. You will receive 2 pages of Fred Graff’s “Food for thought for the Watercolorist”. Dianne will share techniques demonstrated by Fred Graff as he paints on Yupo.
  • Supplies for students to bring”: – 2 or 3 sheets of Yupo 140 weight – any size (find Yupo at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Dick Blick, Cheap Joes’s, etc.)
    – Watercolor paints in various colors
    – Palette and water container
    – Synthetic Blend Brushes – flats and rounds (Fred suggests Silver Black Velvet 1” to 4” flats – Fred sketches with a #6 round brush)
    – Kleenex Tissue
    – Stencils and Stamps
    – Sketches, images and photos to paint from
    – Gel or sponge roller

Printing on a Gelli Plate with Dianne Garner

Date: Saturday, June 26, 2021
Time: 10 am to 3 pm
Cost: $50 for SASi Members and $55 for Non-members.
Age: 16 and older
Skill Level: Beginning to Intermediate (knowledge of color mixing will be helpful)
Class size: Limited to 10 Students (Masks must be worn and seating will be provided 6 ft apart)
Description: Gelli Plate printing is a form of art called monoprinting done on a rubbery plate made of gelatin. Dianne will lead you working with acrylic paints using different tools and stencils to create texture and patterns on the Gelli plate. You will then use a brayer, baren, the back of a spoon or your hand to transfer the image to your paper. You can print the same paper several times and create multiple layers of patterns and backgrounds. Completed prints can be a stand alone work of art or be used as a starting point for other projects.
Supplies available at SASi: SASi will provide some supplies for this class – brushes, some paints, brayers and miscellaneous supplies for class use. Dianne will have a few Gelli plates to use if you don’t have one. Bring what supplies you have – your favorite paint colors, papers and a Gelli Plate. We can fill in any supplies you don’t have. Just sign up and be prepared to have fun!
Supplies for students to bring:

  • One Gelli Arts pad 4×6 or 5×7 – they come in a variety of sizes and round
    (find at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, Dick Blick, Cheap Joes’s)
  • Acrylic paints in various colors
  • Palettes for paint – Paintbrushes
  • Nice quality paper to print on – (copy paper will do)
  • Stamps, popsicle sticks, Q-tips, bubble wrap, texturing tools or stencils, etc.
  • Baby wipes – Paper towels
  • drawing paper or sketch book, pencil for note taking
